People matter
Employee engagement
Our employees are engaged and strongly committed to giving back to our communities. We empower them to be generous with both their time and resources to foster inclusive, healthy places in which to live and work.
Employee volunteering
In 2024, we once again surpassed our 2025 engagement goal with 71% participation in our community programs through opportunities like:
Summer of Service
During this annual companywide volunteer event, employees take time out of their workday to volunteer alongside coworkers, managers and senior leaders. The 2024 program offered 87 projects in partnership with 63 nonprofits in 20 states. Nearly 485 employees rolled up their sleeves volunteered 1,975 hours to build houses, plant vegetables for local food bank farms and everything in between. Since 2009, Symetra employees have volunteered more than 23,000 Summer of Service hours.
BOLD Program
Our BOLD (Board Orientation Leadership Development) program encourages employees to provide leadership and support to organizations in their communities by offering nonprofit leadership training and then matching program participants to nonprofit boards that align with their talents and interests. Nationally, employees currently serve on 31 traditional nonprofit boards and hold five leadership roles with civic organizations such as chambers of commerce and financial industry affiliated organizations, with five new board members taking up roles in the last year.
Empowers Community Award
In 2024, Carlie Lassle was recognized as our Symetra Empowers Communities honoree for her commitment to giving back. Through November 2024, Carlie had recorded nearly 1,000 Symetra Cares hours for March of the Blanketeers, making blankets for kids experiencing illness. She also makes blankets for those grieving the loss of a beloved person or pet. Since 2023, Carlie has crafted and donated more than 200 hats and blankets.

Employee giving
In 2024, our employees donated $1,125,272 (including company match) to support 1,997 nonprofits nationwide and provided 8,820 volunteer hours in our communities. Our annual employee giving events included:
Holiday Giving
Our 2024 Holiday Giving campaign encouraged employees to give back to organizations impacting their own communities. Each employee received $24 in their giving account to donate to a nonprofit of their choice. Almost 64% of employees participated, donating over $173,000 (including company match).
I CARE Employee Giving campaign
I CARE helps employees identify and support nonprofits that mean the most to them and amplifies their contributions with a company match. “One Good Thing” was the theme of our 13th annual campaign, during which employees pledged funds to 771 nonprofits across the country.
